Headwaters Transboundary Project
In the lower 48 states, only one region has the same mix of wildlife and plant life today that it had 200 years ago. It’s our very own Transboundary Region, which straddles the U.S./Canada border and includes the Flathead & Elk Valley watersheds. Its snow supplies billions of gallons of fresh water, feeding the rivers and lakes that influence our regional economic fortunes. It is also among the most endangered landscapes in North America, threatened by climate change and energy exploration. Headwaters Montana actively fights threats to this region, including a disastrous proposal to mine coal near the headwaters of the North Fork of the Flathead in Canada.
